lamsquad has often been<br />

referred to as the Vogue of<br />

Africa – and this is a tag that<br />

gives us so much pride owing<br />

to the great legacy of Vogue and<br />

how the brand continues to serve as<br />

a pacesetter to everything related to<br />

beauty, fashion, style and lifestyle.<br />

For us, it was a no-brainer having<br />

the legendary Edward Enninful on<br />

the cover of this month’s edition.<br />

This was a feature cover, and the<br />

cover on Edward contains a lot of<br />

contributions and inputs from various<br />

editors. However, we are not ruling out<br />

a possible Exclusive cover with Edward<br />

Enninful in the near future. Hey Edward,<br />

we will reach out. Please say yes!<br />

As we all know, Edward Enninful<br />

is a Ghanaian-British journalist who<br />

became the first man and first Black<br />

person to become editor-in-chief in<br />

2017 at British Vogue. Last month,<br />

we woke up to the sad news that he<br />

would be stepping down from the<br />

position.<br />

There are many talks as to why<br />

he may be stepping down from<br />

his position at Vogue, but for us at<br />

<strong>Glamsquad</strong>, the focus remains to<br />

celebrate the great journalist, editor<br />

and fashion icon – who remains to<br />

mean many great things to many<br />

people globally.<br />

To announce his exit as the editor of<br />

British Vogue, New York Times had no<br />

better headline than – “British Vogue<br />

Editor Edward Enninful Out After Losing<br />

Power Struggle with Anna Wintour: Report.”<br />

It said: Edward Enninful is out as editorin-chief<br />

of British Vogue after he failed to<br />

dislodge Anna Wintour from the position<br />

he coveted — the head of the US-based<br />

edition of the influential Condé Nast fashion<br />

publication, according to a report.<br />

The 51-year-old Enninful leaves British<br />

Vogue after a six-year stint as its top editor.<br />

Vogue’s parent company said on Friday<br />

that Enninful, who made history as the<br />

first gay black man to helm the UK-based<br />

publication, would take up a “global<br />

advisory position” at the magazine “with<br />

the freedom to take on broader creative<br />

projects.”<br />

But The Sunday Times reported that<br />

Enninful always considered the job as a<br />

stepping stone to the title he really wanted<br />

but which is occupied by Wintour.<br />

“He felt he had all the right qualities to<br />

be a modern, inclusive editor who could<br />

present a fresh face for Vogue and global<br />

fashion,” a company source told The<br />

Sunday Times.<br />

But the 73-year-old Wintour wasn’t<br />

going anywhere — having been recently<br />

promoted to the position of chief content<br />

officer for Condé Nast, according to The<br />

Sunday Times.<br />

There were many other prominent<br />

publications whose reports revealed that<br />

perhaps there were more enemies than<br />

friends in Edward’s camp – or the fashion<br />

world, as it is. According to some critics –<br />

there were obviously those who felt that the<br />

position of British Vogue’s top<br />

editor wasn’t for a black man.<br />

It appears his sexuality – as<br />

gay, paved the way for him in<br />

the industry, but his colour was<br />

always a factor.<br />

Who really<br />

is Edward<br />

Enninful?<br />

Edward Enninful was born in<br />

Ghana in February 1972 and<br />

when he was still a child, he<br />

moved to Ladbroke Grove,<br />

London, together with his<br />

family.<br />

One of six children, Enninful<br />

was brought to London as a<br />

child and grew up in the city’s<br />

Ladbroke Grove area. He<br />

became interested in fashion<br />

as a teenager when he was<br />

scouted as a fashion model.<br />

He displayed a talent for<br />

fashion styling which led the<br />

then Editor of I-D, Terry Jones,<br />

to appoint Enninful as the<br />

magazine’s fashion director,<br />

the youngest in the industry.<br />

He attended Goldsmith’s,<br />

University of London, well<br />

known for its art programmes,<br />

but left before graduation in<br />

order to plunge full-time into a<br />

fashion editing career.<br />

His Sexuality<br />

At the age of 21, Enninful<br />

told his mother he was gay,<br />

and was thankful for her<br />

reaction. Eventually, he writes,<br />

his father “came around” to<br />

the idea of him being gay.<br />

“I was extremely fortunate<br />

to have the mother I had,”<br />

he writes. “She loved me - I<br />

knew that always - and when<br />

I eventually told her I was gay<br />

at the grand old age of 21,<br />

having returned to London<br />

after a romantic epiphany on<br />

a New York dance floor, there<br />

was no question of me being<br />

exiled by the family,” he writes.<br />

But in London in the Eighties<br />

and Nineties, he says, others<br />

were not as “lucky” as he was.<br />

Throughout and beyond<br />

Pride month, British Vogue,<br />

under Enninful’s leadership,<br />

will represent different LGBT+<br />

stories, including pop star<br />

Janelle Monae, British-<br />

Australian actor Miriam<br />

Margoyles and The Last<br />

Of Us actor Bella Ramsey,<br />

exclusively revealed here by<br />

The Independent.<br />

The Rise of<br />

Edward<br />

Enninful<br />

At the age of 16, Enninful<br />

was spotted on a train by<br />

stylist Simon Foxton. “I was<br />

16 and I had no idea who<br />

Simon Foxton was,” he said<br />

in an interview for Telegraph<br />

<strong>Magazine</strong>. “About two weeks<br />

later I was stopped again, this<br />

time by a model scout. When<br />

I told her that I’d already been<br />

approached by Simon Foxton,<br />

she told me how amazing<br />

he was and weeks later I was<br />

shooting with him at his house,<br />

along with Nick Knight, a<br />

founder-photographer of i-D.”<br />

Enninful called his short<br />

modelling career as his<br />

“baptism into fashion”. Later<br />

on, he got introduced to Trish<br />

and Terry Jones, founder of i-D<br />

magazine, and soon started<br />

assisting i-D fashion director<br />

Beth Summers. He completed<br />

college, getting a degree<br />

at Goldsmiths, University of<br />

London, while balancing his<br />

modelling career and helping<br />

with shoots with Foxton and<br />

Summers. He then got a fulltime<br />

job there.<br />

In 1998, Enninful became<br />

an editor to Italian Vogue.<br />

According to him, working<br />

with Vogue Italia editor-inchief<br />

Franca Sozzani and<br />

photographer Steven Meisel<br />

helped him to develop as a<br />

stylist. “I always say that I was<br />

a London stylist but when I<br />

worked with Steven, I became<br />

a proper stylist.”<br />

At Italian Vogue, he created<br />

the “Black Issue”, which<br />

involved only black models,<br />

like Naomi Campbell, Jourdan<br />

Dunn and Alek Wek. He called<br />

his intention as ending the<br />

“white-out that dominates the<br />

catwalks and magazines”.<br />

The issue was so popular that<br />

Condé Nast had to print an<br />

extra 40,000 copies.<br />

Enninful also styled the June<br />

2011 cover editorial, “Belle<br />

Vere”, which solely featured<br />

plus-sized models such as Tara<br />

Lynn, Candice Huffine, and<br />

Robyn Lawley.<br />

In 2011, Enninful was<br />

tapped to take the style<br />

directorship at W magazine.<br />

He brought significance to the<br />

magazine’s fashion editorials.<br />

For instance, he dressed the<br />

outré R&B artist Nicki Minaj as<br />

a French noblewoman. W’s<br />

editor, credited Enninful in<br />

part with the magazine’s 16<br />

percent growth in ad page in<br />

2012.<br />

Condé Nast International<br />

chairman and chief executive<br />

Jonathan Newhouse declared<br />

him as the successor to<br />

Alexandra Shulman, calling<br />

Enninful “an influential figure in<br />

the communities of fashion,<br />

Hollywood and music which<br />

shape the cultural zeitgeist”,<br />

adding that “by virtue of his<br />

talent and experience, Edward<br />

is supremely prepared to<br />

assume the responsibility of<br />

British Vogue“. It was noted that<br />

Enninful is much more popular<br />

on the internet than Shulman.<br />

In December 2020, Enninful<br />

was promoted to be the first<br />

European editorial director.<br />

He will take over Vogue’s<br />

editorial operations in France,<br />

Germany, Spain and Italy.<br />

In June <strong>2023</strong>, it was<br />

announced Enninful will<br />

transition to a global advisory<br />

role at Vogue, publisher<br />

Condé Nast’s flagship title. In<br />

the new position of editorial<br />

advisor to British Vogue and<br />

global creative and cultural<br />

advisor of Vogue, Enninful will<br />

“contribute to the creative<br />

and cultural success of the<br />

Vogue brand globally, while<br />

having the freedom to take on<br />

broader creative projects.”<br />

Enninful was awarded an<br />

OBE for his services to diversity<br />

in the fashion industry, and in<br />

2018 he received the Media<br />

Award in Honour of Eugenia<br />

Sheppard from the CFDA in<br />

recognition of his career-long<br />

contribution to the fashion<br />

industry.<br />

His Legacy at<br />

Vogue ….and<br />

the Fashion<br />

Universe<br />

When Edward Enninful was<br />

appointed editor-in-chief<br />

of British Vogue in 2017, he<br />

became the first man and the<br />

first black person to hold the<br />

title.<br />

Throughout his six-year<br />

tenure, the firsts have<br />

continued, with Enninful,<br />

recently promoted to a new<br />

global role, championing a<br />

series of pioneering moments.<br />

In 2018 the author Paris Lee<br />

became the first trans person<br />

to feature in the title while a<br />

year later the actor Laverne<br />

Cox became its first trans<br />

cover star.<br />

In 2020, Judi Dench<br />

became Vogue’s oldest cover<br />

star at the age of 85.<br />

That same year its<br />

September cover was shot by<br />

Misan Harriman, the first black<br />

male photographer in the<br />

magazine’s 107-year history.<br />

Two years later the Oscarnominated<br />

actor Timothée<br />

Chalamet became the first<br />

man to land a solo cover<br />

while most recently a series<br />

of covers featured for the first<br />

time a vanguard of disabled<br />

talent.<br />

In another first, the<br />

magazine was made<br />

available as a braille and<br />

audio edition.<br />

Last year, in an interview<br />

with WWD, Enninful mused on<br />

how his role as editor-in-chief<br />

had changed in just five short<br />

years.<br />

“When I started [at British<br />

Vogue] in 2017, I was dealing<br />

with a magazine. Today, I’m<br />

dealing with a brand that<br />

includes print, digital, audio,<br />

video and podcasts, which<br />

is so exciting for somebody<br />

who’s so forward looking.”<br />

During his predecessor<br />

Alexandra Shulman’s 25-year<br />

reign, only 12 covers out of<br />

306 featured black women<br />

while the workforce was mostly<br />

white.<br />

team was made up of 25%<br />

people of colour, and having<br />

been told: “Black girls on the<br />

cover don’t sell,” revenue was<br />

up while digital traffic rose<br />

75% year on year in the first<br />

half of 2021.<br />

Describing his vision,<br />

Enninful said: “I wanted<br />

to reflect what I saw here<br />

growing up, to show the world<br />

as this incredibly rich, cultured<br />

place. I wanted every<br />

woman to be able to find<br />

themselves in the magazine.”<br />

His debut December 2017<br />

issue was dedicated to Great<br />

Britain and featured the black<br />

model and activist Adwoa<br />

Aboah on the cover while<br />

inside there were features<br />

with Kate Moss, Salman<br />

Rushdie, Steve McQueen,<br />

Sadiq Khan and Skepta.<br />

It instantly went viral. One<br />

thousand special hard-bound<br />

souvenir copies sold out<br />

within hours. And in a further<br />

sign that the gilded halls of<br />

Vogue House were no longer<br />

so exclusive, Enninful invited<br />

readers to a free meetand-greet<br />

event. Hundreds<br />

queued up outside.<br />

At the time of his<br />

appointment, Condé Nast<br />

described Enninful as “an<br />

influential figure in the<br />

communities of fashion,<br />

Hollywood and music which<br />

shape the cultural zeitgeist”.<br />

With an unrivalled contacts<br />

list – he counts Naomi<br />

Campbell, Oprah Winfrey,<br />

Beyoncé and Rihanna as<br />

close friends – Enninful has<br />

bolstered British Vogue’s<br />

position and transformed it<br />

into a key powerplayer.<br />

Such is his influence,<br />

Enninful revealed in April<br />

that he had turned down<br />

advertising from major<br />

fashion brands which do not<br />

share his vision of inclusivity.<br />

While other brands reduced<br />

output during the 2020<br />

pandemic, Enninful continued<br />

to push the boundaries of<br />

what a Vogue cover star looks<br />

like, this time choosing three<br />

frontline workers, a midwife, a<br />

train driver and supermarket<br />

assistant to appear on his July<br />

Heroes issue.<br />

In 2021 subscriptions to<br />

British Vogue grew by more<br />

than 14% while the number of<br />

digital visitors rose by 22%.<br />

Last month a report by<br />

Launchmetrics, which ranks<br />

magazines in terms of fashion,<br />

luxury and beauty advertising,<br />

placed British Vogue in first<br />

position while American Vogue<br />

was in third.<br />

Enninful has become a<br />

brand in his own right. His<br />

Instagram is peppered with<br />

photographs of him and his<br />

inner circle. It spans everything<br />

from coffee with Oprah<br />

Winfrey and Gayle King to<br />

red carpet appearances<br />

with Leonardo DiCaprio at<br />

the Cannes film festival and<br />

tea with Lionel Richie at King<br />

Charles’ coronation. Last year<br />

his memoir, A Visible Man,<br />

topped the bestsellers lists.<br />

gossip began to fly: Did the move<br />

have Anna Wintour’s fingerprints all<br />

over it?<br />

Wags compared it to the moment<br />

in “The Devil Wears Prada” when<br />

formidable fashion editor Miranda<br />

Priestley out-maneuvers her French<br />

foe Jacqueline Follet, who had<br />

been gunning for Miranda’s job, by<br />

getting her another role.<br />

The hit movie, of course, was<br />

based on the 2003 novel by Lauren<br />

Weisberger — one of Wintour’s<br />

former assistants.<br />

But some in the industry say<br />

the move was a shrewd one to<br />

keep Enninful within the fold as he’s<br />

become a fashion world celebrity.<br />

Rumors have been rife for<br />

years that Enninful, 51, was plotting<br />

to become the next editor of<br />

American Vogue, which would<br />

have meant turfing out Wintour in<br />

the process.<br />

But at 73, Wintour, who has<br />

been at the helm of US Vogue for<br />

34 years and is also the Global<br />

Editorial Director of Vogue editions<br />

around the world, has no plans<br />

to go anywhere — even as<br />

magazine circulation continues<br />

to plummet in this difficult media<br />

environment, her friends told Page<br />

Six.<br />

“People have tried to doubt<br />

Anna, to take her down, and she’s<br />

amazing — she just keeps on<br />

going” said one person who knows<br />

her well.<br />

“Anna has no plans to retire,”<br />

added a well-placed fashion<br />

source, who admitted that friends<br />

have told Wintour she should step<br />

back and relax.<br />

When announcing his move,<br />

Enninful said that Wintour was part<br />

of the decision for him to “play a<br />

broader role in enhancing Vogue<br />

globally.”<br />

Still, some sources were keen to<br />

stress that Wintour did not engineer<br />

it as a step down for Enninful,<br />

although it certainly takes him out<br />

of the limelight he’s earned as<br />

editor-in-chief. During his tenure,<br />

he’s been celebrated for making<br />

British Vogue a beacon of diversity.<br />

Alexandra Shulman, the former<br />

editor of British Vogue, has admitted:<br />

“It’s no secret that it has been a<br />

sadness and frustration … that he<br />

positioned himself and his vision by<br />

portraying my tenure at Vogue as if it<br />

were a crucible of white privilege. But<br />

in the intervening years I have learnt<br />

this sowrt of thing can happen.”<br />

But Shulman — whose own frosty<br />

relationship with Wintour was laid bare<br />

in a telling BBC documentary in 2016<br />

— said that Enninful “was ultimately<br />

always playing second fiddle to Anna<br />

Wintour.”<br />

As she wrote in the Daily Mail:<br />

“He leaves amid an avalanche<br />

of rumours of rifts with Wintour …<br />

But whether they are true or not,<br />

the announcement that he will be<br />

replaced by an ‘editorial content<br />

director,’ reporting to a multi-step<br />

ladder ending in the New York office,<br />

delivers a death knell to all that I<br />

treasured about the job.”<br />

Enninful, a former top stylist, was<br />

hired by Jonathan Newhouse, the<br />

chairman and former chief executive<br />

of Conde Nast International, in 2017,<br />

although Wintour would most certainly<br />

have had a say, sources confirmed.<br />

In 2020, Wintour apologized<br />

for the lack of diversity in her staff<br />

and her magazine. “I want to say<br />

plainly that I know Vogue has not<br />

found enough ways to elevate and<br />

give space to black editors, writers,<br />

photographers, designers and other<br />

creators,” she wrote in an internal<br />

email first reported by Page Six. “We<br />

have made mistakes, too, publishing<br />

images or stories that have been<br />

hurtful or intolerant.”<br />

However, some black journalists<br />

who had worked with Wintour said her<br />

note was a cynical ploy in response<br />

to the Black Lives Matters movement.<br />

Vogue was forced to deny a rift<br />

between Wintour and Enninful after<br />

she allegedly left him in tears by<br />

taking the plum spot next to the late<br />

Queen Elizabeth on the front row<br />

at Richard Quinn’s runway show for<br />

London Fashion Week in February<br />

2018. It was the monarch’s first —<br />

and last — appearance at a fashion<br />

show.<br />

“The queen had never been to<br />

Fashion Week,” the fashion insider told<br />

Page Six. “It was a huge thing, and<br />

Anna got the photo op. Edward was<br />

blindsided. He was so upset at Anna,<br />

he was in tears.”<br />

Last September, when asked on<br />

Vogue’s video series 73 Questions<br />

what she thought she would be doing<br />

with her life if she weren’t an editor-inchief,<br />

Wintour deadpanned: “Conflict<br />

negotiation.”<br />

“There is no hatred, no animosity<br />

between Anna and Edward, they<br />

work together all the time,” stressed<br />

the source who knows Wintour well.<br />

Enninful recently published a<br />

memoir, “A Visible Man,” in which<br />

he charted his journey as the son<br />

of poor Ghanaian immigrants. His<br />

mother was a seamstress, and he<br />

grew up helping her to make clothes.<br />

This month, he posted a photo of<br />

the book cover emblazoned on the<br />

Duomo in Milan.<br />

“At the moment, Edward’s been<br />

limited to what deals he can accept<br />

due to Condé’s corporate policy,<br />

and he wants more,” said the Wintour<br />

source.<br />

Enninful counts a slew of<br />

celebrities as friends. He’s seen here<br />

with Salma Hayek, French billionaire<br />

François-Henri Pinault, Malala and her<br />

husband, Asser Malik, at the launch of<br />

his book at Claridge’s Hotel in London<br />

in September 2022.<br />

Enninful attempted to shut down<br />

the rumors of his plotting against<br />

Wintour last year, telling CNN: “I don’t<br />

want Anna’s job.”<br />

Enniful got the nickname the<br />

“Queen Mother” among British Vogue<br />

staffers because of his alleged divalike<br />

behavior, which included having<br />

assistants lead him around through<br />

meetings and carry his glasses<br />

and even help apply eyedrops,<br />

according to the Daily Beast.<br />

There were claims that Enninful<br />

had assistants deliver him coffee<br />

at home on the weekends, but a<br />

source said that he actually used a<br />

delivery service.<br />

“I’ve seen his assistant jump out<br />

of a car and run into the [corner<br />

stores] to get him sweets when<br />

he pulls up to an event,” said one<br />

fashion editor.<br />

Enninful counts stars including<br />

Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss<br />

as his best friends. But sources<br />

told Page Six that Campbell and<br />

Enninful stopped talking briefly<br />

when she thanked Wintour after<br />

being awarded the Fashion<br />

Icon award at the British Fashion<br />

Awards in December 2020 —<br />

and neglected to cite Enninful, a<br />

friend of more than 30 years.<br />

However, they’re now back<br />

to being close and Campbell<br />

appeared on the cover of British<br />

Vogue with her baby daughter<br />

in February 2022.<br />

could take over — or Vogue.<br />

Enninfu wrote to staff that<br />

he will “continue to contribute<br />

to the creative and cultural<br />

success of the Vogue brand<br />

globally while having the freedom to<br />

take on broader creative projects.”<br />

Shulman said: “There is no doubt<br />

he will be employed by big brands to<br />

create the strong messaging imagery<br />

that is his trademark and, with the<br />

high profile he has gained during<br />

his six years at Vogue, will be able to<br />

command big bucks for it. Vogue, in<br />

turn, will have access to some of his<br />

diversity credibility, and will be able to<br />

call on him when needed. These kind<br />

of arrangements are not, on previous<br />

evidence, known as very lasting gigs.”<br />

And as for Wintour, one fashion<br />

editor reported to Page Six that<br />

she has “mellowed” with age. Said<br />

another young fashion editor: “She<br />

loves talking to young talent and I<br />

think that’s what keeps her going.”<br />

The word ‘Vogue’ possesses<br />

so much power within the<br />

fashion world. The glossy<br />

magazine is sold across<br />

the world and published in 19<br />

different languages. The queen<br />

of pop icon Madonna has<br />

a whole song dedicated to<br />

Vogue. The legacy is timeless<br />

and sought after, if you work for<br />

Vogue or appear in Vogue, you<br />

have made it in life. Vogue is THE<br />

fashion magazine.<br />

Arthur Baldwin Turnure founded<br />

Vogue in 1892, but it was very<br />

different to what it is now. The<br />

magazine was published weekly<br />

in America and it targeted the<br />

elite socialites of New York high<br />

society. The first copy had a price<br />

of 10 cents – around $3 to-date.<br />

Instead of fashion, the magazine<br />

focused on social etiquette,<br />

traditions of high society, and it<br />

reviewed books, theatre, music.<br />

In short, Vogue was a lifestyle<br />

magazine for the wealthy – a<br />

target audience that remains to<br />

this date.<br />

In 1909, Condé Montrose<br />

Nast, the founder of Condé Nast<br />

Publications, bought Vogue,<br />

and transformed it from a<br />

lifestyle magazine to a fashion<br />

magazine. It targeted women’s<br />

fashion, beauty, composure, and<br />

etiquette. He changed the weekly<br />

publication to publishing every<br />

fortnight. It became monthly in<br />

1973.<br />

Vogue became a magazine<br />

that valued high-quality photos,<br />

a focus that continues to evolve.<br />

British Vogue Editor, Alexandra<br />

Shulman states “In an average<br />

issue [of Vogue] there are over<br />

400 images.” Part of the appeal<br />

of reading Vogue is for the<br />

escapism it offers. Whilst the luxury<br />

fashion is targeted towards a<br />

wealthy audience, the magazine<br />

itself is not costly, meaning the<br />

average person can daydream<br />

and fantasise about a lifestyle<br />

that is portrayed as a dream.<br />

The high-quality photos featuring<br />

beautiful models in a sunny luxury<br />

resort, creates an aura for which<br />

the consumer longs. By having<br />

more photos than interviews,<br />

it allows our minds to transport<br />

ourselves to the appealing<br />

location and lifestyle Vogue is<br />

selling.<br />

allowed Vogue to sell this<br />

escapism, and be at the forefront<br />

of trends. In 1932, Vogue was<br />

one of the first magazines to print<br />

a coloured photo for the cover<br />

– it was of a swimmer holding<br />

a beach ball. When Vogue<br />

was first published, the cover<br />

would feature an illustration,<br />

or an image of a location, or<br />

it featured a person who was<br />

not famous: the first ever cover<br />

in 1892 featured a debutante<br />

at her début. The first female<br />

celebrity to appear on the cover<br />

was Madonna in 1989.<br />

In 1988, Anna Wintour<br />

became editor in chief for<br />

American Vogue – a title she<br />

still holds to-date, alongside<br />

the title ‘Dame’. She needed to<br />

rival the newly launched fashion<br />

magazine Elle, and made a<br />

series of changes in order to<br />

achieve this. She began to<br />

feature celebrities that were not<br />

just models on the cover of the<br />

magazine, such as actresses<br />

and even politicians (such as<br />

Hillary Clinton). This sparked a<br />

wider interest and became<br />

an international trend. She<br />

expanded the target audience<br />

by launching Teen Vogue in<br />

2003, and Men’s Vogue in 2005<br />

in the United States. Vogue<br />

current climate of the world,<br />

such as British Vogue featuring<br />

NHS workers on the cover of<br />

the July 2020 issue during the<br />

pandemic. This awareness keeps<br />

them relevant, as it still feels intouch<br />

with the world, whilst also<br />

balancing this with the ability to<br />

feature high-quality escapism<br />

images.<br />

Vogue’s success continues<br />

to grow, it unites 24.4 million<br />

readers globally, and 42 million<br />

unique monthly online users. In<br />

2009 The New York Times titled<br />

Vogue as “high fashion’s bible”<br />

which perfectly captures the<br />

importance each monthly issue<br />

holds. Vogue is the most famous<br />

fashion magazine in the world – if<br />

you have made it to Vogue, you<br />

have made it in life.<br />

Born 1945 as Peggy Ann<br />

Freeman in Detroit, Michigan,<br />

American model and actress<br />

Donyale Luna was discovered<br />

by the photographer David<br />

McCabe, she moved from<br />

Detroit to New York City to<br />

pursue a modeling career.<br />

In January 1965, a sketch<br />

of Luna appeared on the<br />

cover of Harper’s Bazaar. She<br />

became the first black model<br />

to appear on the cover of a<br />

Vogue magazine, the March<br />

1966 British issue, shot by<br />

photographer David Bailey.<br />

Legendary mannequinmaker<br />

Adel Rootstein, who had<br />

created a Twiggy mannequin<br />

the year before, made one<br />

of her in 1967. Luna’s was the<br />

first well-known, if not the first,<br />

mannequin of a black woman.<br />

Luna also appeared in several<br />

underground films by Andy<br />

Warhol, and had roles in Qui<br />

êtes-vous, Polly Maggoo?<br />

(1966), and most notably as<br />

Enotea in the 1969 Federico<br />

Fellini film Fellini Satyricon as well as<br />

Otto Preminger’s Skidoo, alongside<br />

Groucho Marx.<br />

Luna later moved to Italy<br />

and married photographer Luigi<br />

Cazzaniga. They had a daughter<br />

named Dream. But her fast rise<br />

also introduced her to LSD and<br />

heroin. She died of a heroin<br />

overdose in 1979 at the age of 33.<br />

How To Use Potatoes or<br />

Cucumber – Grate some raw<br />

potatoes or cucumber and place<br />

the shreds on your eyes. Relax and<br />

remove them after 10-12 minutes.<br />

Alternatively, you can also extract the<br />

juice of potatoes or cucumbers. Take<br />

a cotton ball, soak it in the juice, and<br />

place it over your eyes. Make sure the<br />

entire area around the dark circles is<br />

covered. Leave it for 1-3 minutes and<br />

wash off with cold water. In case you<br />

are pressed for time, you can also<br />

directly place slices of cucumber or<br />

potato on your eyes.<br />

gently apply Aloe Vera gel under the eyes and massage<br />

Cold Milk<br />

Cold milk is a natural cleanser for the eyes and also helps in<br />

soothing the sensitive skin around the eyes. Cold milk contains<br />

lactic acid, which not only helps to reduce puffiness but also<br />

lightens the skin. Additionally, potassium in milk allows the skin to<br />

stay better moisturised, leaving you with softer and supple skin.<br />

life, this is not always possible. Hence,<br />

it is beneficial to make Yoga and<br />

Meditation an everyday ritual!<br />

Yoga not only calms down the mind but<br />

also helps to regulate the body clock,<br />

and most importantly, it addresses most<br />

body problems from the core.<br />

Almond oil and Lemon juice<br />

Another tried and tested remedy to treat dark circles is<br />

to mix almond oil and lemon juice. Lemon juice’s active<br />

component is ascorbic acid, along with other nutrients it<br />

helps to reduce water retention which can cause puffy<br />

circles around the eyes. It also has a mild bleaching action,<br />

however, when used undiluted it can have the opposite<br />

effect and cause damage to the skin, so always use<br />

caution.<br />

How To Use Almond Oil & Lemon Juice – Take<br />

about a teaspoon of almond oil and a few drops of lemon<br />

juice, combine them, and gently apply it around the eye<br />

area. Massage and let it rest for 2 to 3 minutes. Rinse post<br />

is to use cold tea bags. Preferably, use<br />

green tea or chamomile tea bags<br />

for quick results. It is thought that the<br />

residual caffeine helps to constrict<br />

blood vessels which reduces blood<br />

flow, helping to provide some relief<br />

from dark circles.<br />

– Soak the bags in water and chill<br />

in the refrigerator. Remove from the<br />

fridge and gently place them on both<br />

parades by bands of<br />

costumed masqueraders,<br />

who are led by a King’s or<br />

Queen’s costumes, who<br />

also compete for King and<br />

Queen titles on Dimanche<br />

Gras (Carnival Sunday).<br />

These celebrations originated<br />

during a period of slavery<br />

where slaves were banned<br />

from attending their masters’<br />

balls and parties, so instead they<br />

improvised by having their own<br />

costumed events in their quarters.<br />

After Emancipation in 1838,<br />

the former slaves challenged<br />

their plantation owners to<br />

publicly host their own Carnival<br />

celebrations. Since then, Carnival<br />

has evolved into an inclusive,<br />

elaborate billion-dollar revenue<br />

earner for Trinidad and Tobago.<br />

It is by far the most spectacular<br />

event on the nation’s calendar.<br />

These celebrations take place<br />

on the Monday and Tuesday<br />

directly before Ash Wednesday,<br />

usually marked in February<br />

or March. A Carnival band<br />

could hold as many as 3,000<br />

masqueraders, and to control the<br />

number of people on the streets,<br />

organizers would divide the<br />

band into sections of 200 to 500<br />

masqueraders. The epicenter for<br />

the two-day Parade of the Bands<br />

in Trinidad and Tobago is Port<br />

of Spain, where I live. However,<br />

similar street parties are held at<br />

the sister capital, San Fernando<br />

and at community level in<br />

Mayaro, Chaguanas, Arima and<br />

Tobago.<br />

While extreme energy and<br />

expensive skimpy costumes<br />

characterize Trinidad Carnival,<br />

Tobago Carnival, known as Bago<br />

Carnival, is a more laidback<br />

celebration focusing on the<br />

theatrical and folk elements of<br />

Carnival. Masqueraders usually<br />

choose to cool down in Tobago,<br />

as it’s considered to be the “last<br />

lap” after Trinidad for those who<br />

need to detach from the ecstasy<br />

of Carnival. The best time to visit<br />

Trinidad and Tobago for Carnival<br />

is the week before Carnival<br />

Monday and Tuesday.<br />

Before COVID-19 struck fear<br />

and uncertainty into the nation,<br />

the last parade was held in<br />

February 2020. TRIBE, Trinidad<br />

and Tobago’s premier carnival<br />

band, is composed of six bands:<br />

Tribe, The Lost Tribe, Bliss, Harts,<br />

Rogue, and Pure. The Lost Tribe<br />

is a band that strongly focuses<br />

on narrative and storytelling<br />

in its presentation. In 2020 the<br />

theme was “Anansi”, which paid<br />

homage to ancestry and the<br />

stories of and from the ancestors<br />

of Caribbean people.<br />

The costumes, such as<br />

Eniyan, represented the elders<br />

who told the stories of Anansi,<br />

and carried it from generation<br />

to generation. Vibrant hues<br />

of yellow, orange, red and<br />

green feathers adorned these<br />

costumes, along with animalistic<br />

features and accessories, such<br />

as claw-decorated gloves, tribal<br />

and animal-themed headwear<br />

and prints, and African-themed<br />

jewelry. This is prevalent in<br />

Carnival fashion, as Anansi<br />

originated from the landscape<br />

and peoples of Africa.<br />

The fashion of Carnival<br />

Monday and Tuesday differ<br />

as Monday is known as the<br />

“let loose,” less structured<br />

day, where attendees can<br />

wear custom swimwear and<br />

casualwear such as sequin<br />

bodysuits with sheer leggings, or<br />

shorts and a top or T-shirt, which<br />

incidentally most people prefer.<br />

Meanwhile,Tuesday is brought to<br />

life in full costume and splendor.<br />

Trinidad and Tobago is<br />

multicultural (Amerindian,<br />

European, African, Indian,<br />

Chinese and Middle Eastern) and<br />

all of its groups have contributed<br />

musical influences to the<br />

sounds of Carnival. Trinidad-style<br />

Carnivals have been evolving<br />

around the world in places<br />

such as Tokyo, Berlin, Hollywood,<br />

Virginia, Miami, New York and<br />

Toronto.<br />

Horseradish Cream about two years ago, and I never<br />

looked back.<br />

Franky, you can never go wrong with this dish, and<br />

I have made it more than two dozen times to guests of diverse<br />

backgrounds and cultures. Yes, they all loved it!<br />

This weekend, please give yourself a threat with our doublesmoked<br />

salmon with horseradish cream recipe. Let’s go!<br />

Ingredients<br />

• 1 tbsp crème fraîche<br />

• 1 tsp horseradish sauce<br />

• 4 slices smoked salmon<br />

• 10 large cooked prawns,<br />

peeled but tails left on<br />

[For the salad]<br />

• Juice 1 lime, finely grated<br />

zest of ½<br />

• 1 tsp clear honey<br />

• ½ tsp finely grated fresh<br />

root ginger<br />

• 2 tbsp light olive oil<br />

• 2 handfuls of small leaf<br />

salad<br />

Method<br />

1. Mix the crème<br />

fraîche with the horseradish<br />

and a little salt and pepper.<br />

2. For the dressing,<br />

whisk the lime juice and zest<br />

with the honey, ginger and<br />

seasoning, then whisk in the<br />

oil.<br />

3. Lay the smoked<br />

salmon and prawns on two<br />

plates, then top with a dollop<br />

of horseradish cream.<br />

4. Toss the salad in most<br />

of the dressing and pile on<br />

top.<br />

5. Drizzle the remaining<br />

dressing around the plate<br />

and serve.<br />
